Mantras - O som das coisas / The sound of things
A mantra is the sound of things. Better saying, eveything in the universe is made of energy and every energy has a certain vibration. This vibration has a sound. And the sound of this vibration is the Mantra. For instance, when we vibrate in Peace, this kind of vibration has a sound and this sound is SHANTI. Thus, one says that SHANTI is the mantra of peace. The very well known OM is considered the sound of supreme energy and it is commomly translated as "I Am". Then, OM SHANTI means "I am Peace".
Our body (physical-emotional. mental) also is a vibrational compound and as everything is vibration, it vibrates according to the energies around it. That means that your energy influences (because of its vibration) everything around you and vice-versa. Therefore, singing the mantra is a powerful tool to achieve the balance of your energetic compound (physical-emotional-mental). Singing OM SHANTI OM will help to balance your energies as weel as singing any positive mantra.
We also put mantras together in a sentence with a particular meaning and we sing these phrases forming a song. We call this Kirtan. The kirtan usually is a devotional song to worship God in Its various manifestations (such as the Devi or goddess, Krishna or the encarnation of god, Shiva or Its manifestation of Universal Love, etc) That's why there are so many "Mantras and songs or "Kirtans".
It would be better for you to pronouce the mantra correctly in order to feel its effects, but don't worry if you don't have a nice voice. Start by chanting softly, letting your voice go freely, your tone of voice will be the one where your throat is ok, smooth and you don't feel it "scratching". Practice and you will discover your tone. Always use all the air in your lungs, i.e., allow the sound to flow while you have air in your lungs. you will see that your voice wil get better and better. It is a matter of practice. it is obvious that if you are going to sing the Peace Mantra it will be better if you try to vibrate in Peace. Technique plus good will surely will bring positive results.
Below I show you the Gaiatri Mantra, a powerful effcient kirtan. I added also different interpretations that people gave to it.

Aí entra a transliteração.
