UPANISHADS
One of the main sources of wisdom in yoga are the Upanishads.
They are a group of texts written by sages thousands of years ago. They are part
of the ancient wisdom of the Veda which are composed of four main treatises,
the Yajur,
Atharva, Rig and Sama Veda. At the end of each there is a sort
of summary of the main ideas. This group of summary texts are called the Vedanta
(small Veda or end of the Veda) and it is composed of the more than two hundred
Upanishad. Just some of them have reached our days, some others were missed
along the thousand of years. From the ones that can still be found and read, ten
are considered the main ones. These are the: Mandukya, Mundaka, Svetasvatara,
Katha, Isha,
Brihadaranyaka, Kaivalya, Kena, Chandogya, Prashna Upanishads.
Originally passed from master to disciple orally as time went by they started to
be written in the sacred language of India, sanskrit. On this website you will
be able to read their translations to English (done by Swami Prabhavananda and
Frederick Manchester, edited by Sri Ramakrishna Math) and to Portuguese (which I
translated).
KAIVALYA UPANISHAD
(Extrato/Extract)
(Eles sempre começam com uma oração/ They always start with a prayer)
Que Brahma nos proteja / May Brahman protect us
Que Ele nos guie / May He guide us
Que Ele nos dê força e correto entendimento/ May He give us strength and correct understanding
Que o amor e a harmonia estejam conosco / May love and harmony be with us
OM Paz Paz Paz / Om Shanti Shanti Shanti
(Disciple - Master, teach me the knowledge of Brahma. I heard that this knowledge is supreme, hidden and sacred, searched by the sage, and that the one who searches for it is free from impurities and reaches the Supreme Being.)
Seja devotado a Brahman. Medite nele incessantemente. (Teacher - Try to know Brahman acquiring faith on the Scriptures words and on your Guru. Be devoted to Brahman. Meditate upon Him ceaselessly. Neither through work, nor through genetic inheritance, nor through riches, but through devotion to him and through indifference to the world, men reaches immortality.)
O céu supremo brilha no lótus do coração. Aqueles que lutam e aspiram entram ali. Entendendo o espírito das escrituras espirituais, eles renunciam ao mundo.(The supreme heaven shines in the heart's lotus. Those who struggle and aspire reach there. By understanding the spiritual Scriptures spirit, they renounce the world.)
